A big ol' emperor scorpion

Here we see an emperor scorpion being handled. Exotic pet enthusiasts often handle these creatures, since they rarely sting. They will occasionally nip with their large pincers though, which can be disconcerting.

Their venom isn't very potent, either. A friend of mine was stung a while back -- but only because he absent-mindedly brought his hand straight down on an emperor scorpion that was sitting on his lap. It hurt like the dickens, but didn't have any more severe side-effects. As with any type of venom, there's always the possiblity of anaphylactic shock, but that's unlikely, and I don't know if it has ever actually happened with these animals.
